How to Transition from AC to Heat Efficiently: Tips for Your HVAC System
Cool, crisp nights are quickly approaching and that means you will likely be transitioning from air conditioning to heat in the coming weeks. While this may seem like a routine task, there are a few things you can do to ensure a seamless process.
Make it Gradual.
While it’s probably tempting to crank the heat up on that first cool evening, that’s not necessarily the best for your HVAC unit. Gradually increasing the temperature over a couple of hours or even days allows your unit to work efficiently without putting stress on it. A programmable thermostat also allows you to automate your system setting a schedule throughout the day. And yes, that “burning” smell is normal the first time that you turn your unit on for the season. It is simply dust that has settled in your ductwork burning off.
Inspect Vents & Ductwork.
Make sure that all vents in your home are uncovered, unblocked, and clear of debris. Unlike common myths, closing a vent or covering it will actually cause your unit to work harder and less efficiently. You’ll also want to complete a visual inspection of any duct work to make sure it’s not hanging or torn before switching on the heat.
Improve Insulation.
Use caulk or weather stripping on doors and windows before you start the first warm air blowing. This ensures that the warmth stays inside where you want it. A good test is to light a candle and hold it around the seals of the window or door. If it’s blowing or flickering you could have a leak.
Schedule Maintenance.
Finally, call Thornton’s Heating & Air at the beginning of the new season for a maintenance check up. We will inspect your unit, tighten coils, check fluid levels, oil motors, inspect burners, calibrate your thermostat and more. Semi-annual maintenance can prevent problems before they arise and keep your unit running smoothly, longer.
