The Latest Advances in Eco-Friendly Refrigerants for the HVAC Industry

You may have heard on the news or social media about new changes coming to the HVAC industry. As always, Thornton’s Heating & Air is staying on top of these upcoming changes however, we strive to keep you, our customers, informed about new regulations and what that means for your HVAC unit.

The AIM Act of 2020.

The AIM Act was signed into law in the United States in December 2020. The main objective of this law is to reduce hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by over 85% over the next 15 years. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are commonly found in refrigerants and air conditioning however they’ve been shown to be potent greenhouse gases that can affect global warming.

How This Affects the HVAC Industry.

Under the AIM Act, the HVAC industry must gradually reduce its reliance on HFCs and transition to more environmentally friendly refrigerant. The industry is now moving towards lower GWP alternatives such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and natural refrigerants that result in a lower environmental impact.  Our technicians and team will be continuously trained on these new refrigerants, any new equipment needed to use them, and make sure any required certifications are up to date.

How This Affects You.

Most of our customers won’t notice a change immediately. That’s because according to the National Associate of Home Builders, “existing air conditioning and heat pump equipment is not subject to EPA regulations and can continue to be used through equipment end-of-life.” After January 1, 2025, any residential and light commercial units that are manufactured must use the new refrigerant. This simply means when the time comes for a new heating or air unit, your new system will be subject to the change however you likely won’t even notice a difference.

As always, Thorton’s Heating & Air is here to answer any of your questions about new changes, regulations or equipment. Give us a call today any of your heating and air conditioning needs!
