The Mini Split HVAC System: Is it the Right Fit for Your Home?
It’s summer and there’s no doubt that your air conditioning unit is probably working overtime by now. Sometimes, however, certain areas in your home or business just need a little extra help keeping the temperature cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Maybe you’ve added on, enclosed your garage, or have a bonus room that just doesn’t stay cool. A mini split system may be the perfect answer to your temperature problems.
What is a Mini Split System?
A mini split system, also known as a ductless mini split, is a type of heating and cooling system that consists of an outdoor compressor/condenser and one or more indoor air-handling units. These units are connected by a conduit that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain.
Just like the name says, these units do not connect with your existing ductwork which distributes area evenly across your home. Instead, they focus on a certain zone or room in your home or business. These units can be installed in residential spaces, businesses or even multi-family units.
The Benefits of a Mini Split.
Energy Efficient. Instead of utilizing existing ductwork to heat or cool an additional area in your home, these ductless units are concentrated on keeping one specific area comfortable therefore causing your whole house HVAC unit to run less. This also means you can set a different temperature for a specific area (remember that hot bonus room over the garage?) and turn it on and off as needed.
Easy Installation. Unlike traditional units requiring ductwork to be run throughout the entire home, a mini split can simply be mounted to an interior wall and run to a smaller outdoor unit. This makes this a great choice for an older home that doesn’t have ductwork or an addition. Since these units are smaller and more focused on a specific area, they’re also much less costly than a whole house HVAC system.
Convenient & Quiet. Unlike a noisy window unit that constantly runs, and oftentimes doesn’t really keep the entire space cool, a mini split system operates at a low noise level. This makes them ideal for an extra bedroom, office space or bonus area.
