HVAC FAQs: Answers to Your Most Common Heating and Cooling Questions

Heat in the winter and cool air in the summer are something we all need but often don’t think about until they become an issue. Oftentimes HVAC units and maintenance can become confusing. That’s why we have compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions and answers for homeowners.

1. What does HVAC stand for?

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. This system is designed to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality by controlling temperature, humidity, and airflow in your home or business.

2. How often should I really change my HVAC filter?

For the average home, you should plan to change your filter every 1-3 months however this depends on several factors. If you have pets in your home or allergies then a filter should be changed more often. Changing your filter is one of the easiest ways to keep the air flowing freely, your energy usage down, and you breathing better.

3. How often should my unit be serviced?

In North Carolina your HVAC unit should be serviced once in the cool months, around September before the really cool air arrives, and again in the spring before the hot, humid air moves in. This semi-annual maintenance often helps to catch small issues before they turn into major problems.

4. How long does a new unit normally last?

With proper maintenance, an HVAC system usually lasts 15 to 20 years. However, parts like compressors or fans might need replacement sooner. If your system is over 10-15 years old and frequently needs repairs, it might be time to consider an upgrade.

5. How do I know if my unit can be repaired or if it’s time to replace?

There are several factors to consider when it’s time to replace your unit. If it has needed more than a few repairs in a short period of time, it is more than 15 years old, your energy bills continue to rise despite proper maintenance, or it is cooling your house unevenly then it may be time to replace your unit. Our technicians are happy to provide you with their honest, experienced opinion and offer a free quote for a new unit.

6. Do you offer warranties?

New HVAC units often come with manufacturers’ warranties on the parts and equipment. However, Thornton’s Heating & Air is happy to offer an additional 10 year warranty on labor as well. Find out more here.

7. How much is a new unit?

The price of a new HVAC unit depends on many factors including the size of your home, the efficiency of the unit, how many units are needed and more.

8. What are my payment options?

We offer cash, credit card, and are happy to discuss financing options with you including no interest financing when paid in full in 18 months with approved credit.

9. Why is my HVAC unit making strange noises?

Unusual sounds can indicate different problems, such as loose parts, debris in the system, or failing motors. If you hear banging, squealing, or grinding, it’s best to schedule a professional inspection to diagnose and fix the issue.

10. What services do you offer?

In addition to offering new HVAC units, Thornton’s Heating & Air offers maintenance, repairs, ventilation services, ductwork and more.
