Your Heat Is Out. Now What?

At some point and time, it happens to everyone. Maybe you wake up and step out of bed to find it’s freezing in your house, or you walk in from work to a cold space. When your heat suddenly fails there are several factors to consider when getting your home back toasty warm.

Check Your Thermostat.

The first place to check when the heat isn’t working is your thermostat. First, make sure it’s on as many thermostats require batteries which will eventually need to be changed. When you’ve ruled that out, make sure it is turned to the correct setting, either auto or heat, and the temperature is high enough to trigger it to start.

Check Your Air Filters.

Dirty or clogged air filters prevent air from properly circulating around your home. Our technicians recommend changing your filters around every two months unless you have a home with pets which may require more frequent changes. Dirty or clogged filters can prevent the air from properly circulating or prevent warm air from blowing out at all.

Closed Vents.

The old wive’s tale states that closing vents in rooms that aren’t used often keeps the warm air where you need it and saves you money. In reality, this is not true. Closing your vents causes cold spots in your home and means that your unit is working extra to overcompensate and keep other areas in your home to your desired temperature. Keep your vents open, uncovered and free from anything blocking them to ensure your HVAC system is running to its optimal capacity.

Oil or Propane System.

Some hybrid units have a combination electric heat pump with a paired propane system. If your heat goes out and you have this type of unit, you may want to confirm that your fuel source hasn’t run out by contacting the provider or checking your tank.
